Can you believe it? The Holiday Season is here! Before you pack up the car and head over the river and through the woods to visit family, here are some tips to help you stay safe on your holiday road trip(s).

Map out your trip in advance. We’re all dependent on our GPS these days but in the event your service is disrupted — or your device’s battery dies — it’s always a good idea to have an old-fashioned atlas on hand or your directions printed out. MapQuest and GoogleMaps are two good resources for plotting out your route.

Check traffic reports. A lot of families will be sharing the road with you during the Holidays, and the extra volume can lead to serious highway congestion. Even minor accidents can quickly throw off your trip’s entire timetable, so keep checking your local news via the radio or social media. The USDOT’s website has links to check regional transit conditions as well.
Stock up on entertainment. Make sure the kids’ tablets are loaded with movies or games and have plenty of music – mp3 player, CDs, etc. – and/or audio books on hand.

Have an emergency kit on board. In the event something bad happens while you’re traveling, you’ll definitely be glad to have a kit with road flares, first-aid materials, a flashlight, jumper cables, etc. in your trunk. Better safe than sorry!
